Rustically sophisticated, this three-bedroom, 3,400-square foot creek-side lodge in Shooting Star near the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR), was smartly designed by local starchitect John Carney. It has grand spaces for entertaining and also intimate spaces to relax and reconnect with your family or friends. (Carney and his firm, Carney, Logan, Burke, designed the Laurance S. Rockefeller Interpretive Center, Four Seasons Denver, and JHMR’s Bridger Center and Tram Dock.)
Three bedrooms—two bedroom suites with king size beds and walk-in closets and the third a bunkroom with four twin bunks—are all private and overlook the East Fork of Fish Creek, which runs through the lodge’s backyard.
Whether entering this home from the attached two-car garage or the main entrance, you’ll be greeted by a collection of fine art and artifacts from around the world, from Mexican pottery to Chinese textiles and African sculptures. The collection beautifully compliments the mountain modern interiors that are contemporary-yet-cozy.
In the great room there are soaring cathedral ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame views of Apres Vous and Rendezvous Mountains, home to JHMR. Enjoy these vistas from a dining table that seats 10, or from a comfy chenille couch that even more people can fit on. Up the coziness factor by getting a fire going in the stacked stone fireplace that dominates the great room’s eastern wall. (A flat screen TV is cleverly recessed into the stonework above the mantle and, when not wanted, hidden by doors made from reclaimed barn wood.) Accessed from the great room is an outside stone terrace with a grill, fireplace, and hot tub.
The great room encompasses almost all of this lodge’s public spaces, the living and dining areas, and at the southern end, the kitchen, which is professional grade and has a six-burner Wolf gas range and also an under-counter wine fridge. In addition to work space, the kitchen island has a bar roomy enough for four stools, the perfect place to eat breakfast before heading out to ski, hike, fish, or go wildlife viewing.
Also on the ground floor is a bedroom suite. Entered via a private hallway between the great room and the garage, this suite has a bathroom with a double vanity, walk-in shower, deep soaking tub, and WC. The East Fork of Fish Creek flows almost directly beneath the windows on the bedroom’s western walls. Leave the windows open at night and you’ll definitely hear the creek burbling past. In the distance you can see the southern Tetons.
The master suite, media room/library/office, and bunkroom are all upstairs. At the southern end of the second floor, the master suite has views of the creek below, and, in the opposite direction, of Sleeping Indian Mountain, one of the valley’s most famous peaks.
Between the master suite and the bunkroom is the cozy media room/library/office, the queen sleeper sofa can accommodate two additional guests. A large 4K TV with a Playstation game console is here, along with two built-in desks and bookshelves stocked with a range of novels and non-fiction. Just outside this room is a game closet with games from Twister to Trivial Pursuit and Risk.
The bunkroom is at the north end of the house. It has a private (but not en suite) bathroom with a walk in shower, WC, and double vanity; this is just across the hall from the bunks.
Developed (and still owned and run) by the third-generation of the family that originally homesteaded here in the 1930s, Shooting Star is home to Jackson Hole’s most in-demand addresses. Fish Creek Lodge is within walking distance of the shopping and dining in the base area of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. A pathway connects Shooting Star to the towns of Wilson and Jackson as well as to the entrance of Grand Teton National Park.
