Tucked into the side of Snow King Mountain a couple of hundred feet above the valley floor, The Perch, is the best of classic and current Jackson Hole. The heart of The Perch is a log cabin built in the late 1920s (of logs felled nearby on Snow King Mountain) and formerly home to some of the valley’s most notable residents, including Clarence “Stearnie” Stearns, a WWII vet who, with his wife Dodie, founded Hungry Jack’s General Store in Wilson in 1954.
Since its construction, the original cabin was added onto and, today, the entire 2,500-square-foot, 3-bedroom home has been recently remodeled. “But we made sure to keep the cozy, historic vibe of the cabin intact,” says the interior designer who directed the remodel.
The original cabin is not only the metaphoric heart of The Perch, but also its literal heart: today it’s where the home’s living room and kitchen are. This open, airy, bright space has a professional-grade kitchen, an adjacent dining area with a six-person table and elk antler chandelier surrounded by windows on three sides, an expansive kitchen island with bar seating for four, and a river rock fireplace surrounded by armchairs and a sectional. From it you can see the southern end of the Teton Range, Glory Bowl, an area popular with skiers (in winter) and hikers (in summer). Doors off the dining area lead to an outdoor living room and wrap-around deck. Thanks to thoughtful landscaping, parts of the deck are very private, while other areas are open with views to the Tetons.
The additions made over the years to the original cabin include what today are three bedrooms and an office. The office and master suite are at the back of the house and have the most intimate and hygge feeling of any space in The Perch because of floor-to-ceiling windows that open to mature landscaping in the backyard. Both also have doors to a wooden deck that, in summer, is surrounded by what feels like a forest of blooming flowers. (The rest of the year, it just feels like it sits in a forest, because it does!) Also, this deck has an eight-person hot tub.
At the front of the home is a guest room facing the Tetons and the National Elk Refuge. It has a queen-size bed.
In its own corner of the house is a two-story area consisting of a nook with a twin bed and powder room on the main level and the second guest bedroom on the upper level. Up a set of stairs, over the nook, three twin beds are on one side, with a TV/play area on the other, separated by a closet area. Here the upstairs and downstairs are open to each other, and the whole area has a door that closes to the rest of the house. (It is important to note that while this area has its own powder room, it shares a shower with the guest room.)
Adding to this home’s Jackson Hole bona fides is its location. This neighborhood on the lower slopes of Snow King is a favorite with locals for being private yet proximate to the amenities of downtown, which is less than one-mile away. A mix of architectural styles, in this neighborhood new builds sit next to historic log cabins and A-Frame ski chalets, making it full of personality. A stay in this home will give you a real sense of what it’s like to live in Jackson. And the base area of Snow King is just to the east. You can walk to the resort’s hiking trails, or to the weekly Wednesday night farmers’ market it hosts between June and September.
