Home on the Range is a magnificent retreat in a truly magnificent location: twenty spectacular private acres at the base of Gros Ventre North, aproned by the sweeping grasslands of the historic Walton Ranch. The Tetons rise above the range like giant castles of stone and snow; herds of cattle browse contentedly below. Home on the Range is halfway between Jackson and Teton village, solitary in its gorgeous wilderness setting and yet just a short drive from all that Jackson Hole has to offer.
A long, tree-lined, private drive descends Gros Ventre Butte to the house. The driveway curves under a porte-cochere and pauses before the home’s front door, a confection of swirling wrought iron and lamp-lit glass that marks the transition from wilderness to domesticity like a gate in a fairy tale.
Inside, big, open rooms flow into each other, brimming with light. Massive, tree trunk pillars support peaked, wood ceilings; stone and wood floors feel smooth and cool underfoot, huge picture windows frame the ever-changing panorama outside. The kitchen is pure pleasure. A six-burner range is set in an arched, tiled alcove; mica pendant lamps shed golden light onto the stone topped island, sink and work space, and a graceful, wood-burning, river rock fireplace, one of many throughout the house, can be seen from the kitchen.
The great room’s soaring ceiling and high windows surround a beautiful, river rock fireplace. Across the space, a bar made of the same rounded stones offers a place to pour, taste and converse. A charming, rustic, buck-head chandelier floats above a large sectional sofa in front of the fire, and big glass doors open to the deck. The broad wood deck is a center of attraction with multiple areas for dining, entertaining and playing. A wooden playground and a basketball hoop provide plenty of child-friendly fun. Back inside, steps lead up to a second dining and TV room, the perfect place for family pizza night.
Home on the Range has five spacious bedrooms. On the main level, a simple, pleasant bedroom with a queen bed that has a closet and a full, private bath. Continuing, the study/den, with its leather couches, built-in desk, flat screen TV, and substantial fireplace is the place for movies, reading, or work next to the crackling fire.
Up a set of stairs past the study/den is the light-filled studio apartment, set apart from the rest of the house, with cooking, living and dining areas of its own. There is a king size bed, and a couch in a windowed alcove can be converted to a queen bed. Two closets provide ample storage space. The apartment is a perfect, quiet retreat for anyone who would appreciate a bit of extra space and privacy.
Back towards the front of the house, another set of stairs leads to the upper level in that area of the villa. The Tetons fill every window of the primary bedroom, and a king size, four-poster bed facing a wood-burning fireplace. An armoire hides a flat screen TV. A roomy private balcony provides a spot to sit, feet up, and breathe in the clean, sage-scented, mountain air; a stairway leads to the hot tub.
The master bath is spacious and serene. A hammered copper soaking tub stands beneath a group of tall, slender windows; there is a separate shower, a water closet, double sinks, and a walk-in closet as well. A wide landing overlooking the Great Room lies between the master bedroom and a smaller guest room – a good spot for children, given its proximity to the master. The landing itself can quickly and easily become another sleeping area with the leather couch unfolded into a queen size bed. Another guest room off the landing has a striking aesthetic with dark, rich fabrics. It shares a full bath with the bedroom next door. Here, a nest-like, twig chandelier hangs above a king bed.
