Get Off-the-Beaten Path with a Grand Teton National Park Trip
While three major ski resorts in the region beckon skiers of all levels with the ultimate winter activity in Jackson, many find that taking a day off the busy slopes and challenging terrain to experience a different kind of snow play can be equally invigorating. Here are two of our favorites in Grand Teton National Park, where nature provides refreshment.
Nordic Skiing on the Inner-Park Road
Nordic skiing is many a local’s go-to winter activity for a day filled with easy, refreshing fun, especially amid the breathtaking setting of Grand Teton National Park. While gliding parallel to the Teton Range, Nordic skiers can trace the edges of the distinctive peaks and snow-covered lakes. Starting at the park’s Taggart Lake Trailhead, the Teton Park Road is open to classic cross-country skiing, skate skiing, snowshoeing, and walking on a groomed track that winds its way to Signal Mountain Lodge.
Ski rentals are conveniently available at Dornan’s Trading Post in Moose, near the park’s Moose Entrance Station. As luck would have it, Dornan’s also has a fine selection of specialty foods and wine for provisioning.
Take a Step Back in Time on Vintage Snowshoes
During the winter, interpretive rangers offer guided snowshoe hikes twice weekly in Grand Teton National Park as a way to introduce participants not only to the winter ecology of the park, but also to snowshoeing — in the manner of by-gone days. Before the tour begins, participants are outfitted in a pair of antique wooden snowshoes, the oldest of which dates back to 1943, and are taught a few basics that are unique to the snowy terrain and navigating it with large, vintage snowshoes that resemble tennis racquets. While these ranger-led excursions provide an introduction to snowshoeing, they also delve into topics like park history, winter wildlife adaptations, animal tracks, and snowpack science. The guided, two-hour long snowshoe hikes begin at 1:30 p.m. and are held every week on Wednesdays and Fridays through March 15, 2024. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (307) 739‑3399, Monday through Friday.
